Some of My Favorite Hymns

Hymns have been a big part of my upbringing. In my family, we sing on average 10 – 15 hymns weekly and we also sing hymns in church. Today, I thought that I’d make a quick list of some of my absolute favorite hymns. I have a YouTube playlist that has all of (and a few more) of these hymns on it sung by the Lutheran Warbler on YouTube. If you’re interested in listening to it this is the link: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLVIrdzMCj3mh8XYOphdTK0kRcnUCaP7WJ

· ABIDE WITH ME! FAST FALLS THE EVENTIDE by Henry F. Lyte – This one is my favorite evening hymn and I sing it (or at least read through it) every night before I go to sleep. Lyrics can be found here: http://lutheran-hymnal.com/lyrics/tlh552.htm

· I AM JESUS’ LITTLE LAMB by Henrietta L. von Hayn – This was a hymn that my dad used to sing every night when my siblings and I would be put into our beds so it’s one that’s been with me for a very, very long time. Lyrics can be found here: http://lutheran-hymnal.com/lyrics/tlh648.htm

· TAKE MY LIFE AND LET IT BE by Frances R. Havergal – I like to sing this one in the morning. It reminds me what the purpose of every day should be to me: to serve the Lord. It can be easy to forget to consecrate the day to the Lord in the midst of all that is going on throughout the day and this reminds me to do that. Lyrics can be found here: http://lutheran-hymnal.com/lyrics/tlh400.htm

· AWAKE MY SOUL, TO JOYFUL LAYS by Samuel Medley – This is another that I like to listen to / sing / read in the morning. It is also one that we sing sometimes for the beginning of the service at my church. This hymn reminds me of all that God has done and still does for me. Lyrics can be found here: http://lutheran-hymnal.com/lyrics/tlh340.htm

· WHAT A FRIEND WE HAVE IN JESUS by Joseph Scriven – This one is one of the most comforting hymns that I have ever heard. It is also one of the hymn that I love to listen to / sing / read frequently because it is so easy to be stressed, frightened, and discouraged and forget to take these things to the Lord in prayer and this hymn reminds me to do that. Lyrics can be found here: http://lutheran-hymnal.com/lyrics/tlh457.htm

· CHIEF OF SINNERS THOUGH I BE by William McComb – This has been a long-time favorite of mine. The lyrics are absolutely wonderful to just contemplate and I am glad that I have committed this one to memory. This is also the hymn that we sang at my great-uncle’s funeral and so it is special to me for that reason as well. Lyrics can be found here: http://lutheran-hymnal.com/lyrics/tlh342.htm

· GOD LOVED THE WORLD SO THAT HE GAVE by an unknown author, translated by August Crull – This one really reminds me of all of the things that God has done and still does for my salvation. I like to listen to this one I’m feeling sad because it makes me happy, knowing that God loves me. Lyrics can be found here: http://lutheran-hymnal.com/lyrics/tlh245.htm

· CROWN HIM WITH MANY CROWNS by Matthew Bridges – This was one of my uncle’s favorite songs to play on the organ so it’s a hymn that I think of often. Along with that, though, it’s a beautiful song of praise and I love to sing it. At my church we usually sing it around Easter, Trinity, and Reformation. Lyrics can be found here: http://lutheran-hymnal.com/lyrics/tlh341.htm

· BEAUTIFUL SAVIOR by an unknown author, translated by Joseph A. Seiss – This is one of my favorite hymns because of the tone. I think that it is one of the most beautiful songs of praise in our hymnal and I wish that we sang it more often in church. I think that the last time we did was way back in 2012 when our congregation celebrated its 50th anniversary. Lyrics can be found here: http://lutheran-hymnal.com/lyrics/tlh657.htm

· LAMB OF GOD, PURE AND HOLY by Nikolaus Decius – At my church we sing this song at every one of our Lenten Vespers, starting on Ash Wednesday going all the way up to Good Friday. I have loved this one ever since I was a little kid. Lyrics can be found here: http://lutheran-hymnal.com/lyrics/tlh146.htm

· STRICKEN, SMITTEN, AND AFFLICTED by Thomas Kelly – This is another Lenten hymn (a lot of my favorite hymns are from the Lent section of the hymnal). This one really reminds me of how Jesus suffered and died for the sins of all people and our need for a Savior. Lyrics can be found here: http://lutheran-hymnal.com/lyrics/tlh153.htm

· O DEAREST JESUS, WHAT LAW HAST THOU BROKEN by Johann Heermann – This is one of my favorite Lenten hymns that we usually sing on either Maundy Thursday or Good Friday. I love the lyrics to this one and its message. Lyrics can be found here: http://lutheran-hymnal.com/lyrics/tlh143.htm

· CHRIST, THE LIFE OF ALL THE LIVING by Ernst C. Homburg – This was my grandpa’s favorite hymn while he was still alive and when I hear it, I remember him. It also is one of my favorite hymns now. I think that this is another one that we typically sing during the Lenten season. I also think that this has one of the most beautiful endings to a hymn that I have ever heard. Lyrics can be found here: http://lutheran-hymnal.com/lyrics/tlh151.htm

· A MIGHTY FORTRESS IS OUR GOD by Dr. Martin Luther – Martin Luther has written some of my favorite hymns in our hymnal (though this is the only one by him on this list, I think). The lyrics are beautiful and this is another one that we sang at a funeral a few years ago. Lyrics can be found here: http://lutheran-hymnal.com/lyrics/tlh262.htm

· FOR ALL THE SAINTS WHO FROM THEIR LABORS REST by William W. How – This is one of my favorite hymns and has been for a few years now. We usually sing this around Reformation and All Saint’s Day. I think that the lyrics are absolutely beautiful and I love to hear it played on the organ as well. Lyrics can be found here: http://lutheran-hymnal.com/lyrics/tlh463.htm

· I KNOW THAT MY REDEEMER LIVES by Samuel Medley – Samuel Medley is another one of my favorite hymn writers. This one is always sung on Easter morning and we also sing it as a family at our family gathering on Easter. It is one that always moves me to tears of joy. Lyrics can be found here: http://lutheran-hymnal.com/lyrics/tlh200.htm
